Philip recently moved with his family to LA. He is constantly bullied and considered different from the others both because he is new in town and most importantly for the color of his skin. He still has connections with his African heritage and Cameroon. Thanks to the ultra technological glasses stolen from Doctor Chang, he is able to communicate with the glasses and learn math and physics instantly, permitting him to succeed in school. The only person with whom he feels connected is Rose. So, a new and sincere romance develops throughout the book. In the end, everything works well for the two lovebirds (even the medical operation of his mom) and he can finally feel accepted by the other students and in society in general. Phillip’s story become eventually known around the world in the end. Overall, the play is well written, effective in its simple but vivid language and realistic (despite the presence of the ultra-advanced technology glasses), with an abundance of important social issues (racism, bullies, own identity and social acceptance) that are marvelously tangled together.
