This is a book about perseverance and hope. This story all came about due to my Quaker Parrot, Harley, flying away due to being spooked by fireworks, on a rainy 4th of July night, last year while I was away on vacation. I came home immediately and began my search to find him. I put fliers all around town, joined local Community groups in my area, lost and found parrot sites on social media, and every morning drove all around calling out his name and whistling for him. It was a full-time job. But I never gave up hope. Six weeks later, he was found fifty-two miles away from my home.
The best part about it is how I got it to be illustrated. I had a couple of friends who offered to do it, but due to their work schedules, they understandably, couldn’t find the time. I ended up calling the local High School Art Department on the suggestion of a friend, to see if they would be interested in taking on the project. They thought I was crazy at first. But after repeated calls, they took a chance with me and agreed to do it. Each student was assigned a page and drew what they saw when they read it. They were as excited as I.
This book is not only a project of my heart, but it gave these kids a wonderful opportunity at an early age to have their work published in a book, and a great start to a resume if they choose to pursue illustration as their profession down the road….
