This book is about a male rainbow lorikeet named Winston, that was bred by a commercial breeder, and then on sold to a pet store located in an outback Australian town, where he languished for a year, due to his aggressive behaviour, before a kindly old lady purchased him. She went to the pet store intending to buy a cute puppy or kitten for companionship, but upon seeing Winston her plans changed, even though she had not cared for a pet bird before, let alone a feisty rainbow lorikeet. Initially the story is about their relationship until Winston is unexpectedly turned loose after spending his whole life in captivity. Then the book tells the story about the places he visits; the people he meets, while trying to survive in the wild without any prior experience.
