Tori Watson's life is almost perfect. She has a wonderful husband, Cory, and two college-age children. Life is so good! That all changes in an instant one early summer evening, when an unwelcome announcement shatters Tori's world.

She retreats to her parents' lake home to get away from everything and everyone. Several weeks later, her childhood friend, Mina, joins her at the Cottage. As teenagers, Tori and Mina were united in their love of horses and "all things horse." But, as adults, with very different lifestyles, they drifted apart.
