Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, children in all grades were forced to do online education. Probably the most damaging consequence of this is that many of all K-3rd grade students did not get consistent reading instruction. Reading is based on a distinct hierarchy of skills, from basic consonant and vowel sounds, to blends, to syllabication to acquiring a sight vocabulary, to comprehension. Without any of the basic skills, the child cannot read what the author wrote. In other words, they can't accurately read and understand any text. The consequences of this are dire. Poor readers hate reading, school, and most teachers. They can become angry and rebellious, often leading to crime or poverty. We must teach them in elementary school, otherwise it is usually too late. Get Caught Up in Reading is a book designed for anyone who can read to teach someone else to read. Ms. Parker Johnson was born in a small town near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and has always been an avid reader and writer of comedic scripts. As a child, she taught her little sister, who had a hearing problem, how to read. She also "taught school" to the neighborhood children at a picnic table in her backyard. As she got older, Ms. Parker Johnson became more involved in church, acting as the President of the Youth Fellowship and teaching Sunday School. Ms. Parker Johnson spent 40 years following her passion for teaching. During her career as an elementary reading teacher, she wrote and produced plays and skits that celebrated reading. Ms. Parker Johnson sill writes plays and stories as well as tutoring reading on the weekends. She lives with her two cats and her grandson.
