Evelyn Chapman Castillo was born in the city of Tacloban on the island of Leyte in the Philippines. Her father was an American from Iowa and died before World War II. She and her mother, brothers and sisters escaped to the mountains during the Japanese invasion of the Philippines during World War II. When evacuating and fleeing, she heard about mystical creatures. These folkloric creatures inspired her to write this book. Evelyn met and married her late husband, Leonel Castillo, a U.S. Peace Corp volunteer, in the Philippines. They came to the United States in 1965. They have two children, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Evelyn is also the author of And They Returned, Life in Leyte During World War II .
