Rapes are a widespread problem that India faces today. Similarly, the oppression of various tribal groups, religious communities and conditioned thinking that perpetuates stereotypical thinking surrounding these are among several things that need to be challenged through language, art and poetry. In 2012, a gruesome incident had shaken our country in December. ‘Dear Nirbhaya’ is the poem written in retrospect of what devastated us and made the students of colleges come out to protest. The way that peaceful protest was discouraged left me with questions. It is a poem of both tribute and a promise to Nirbhaya that we will have to fight to prevent cannibalism of this nature.
