This is a novel depicting the ills affecting the youth today. Nowadays it is not uncommon to see students wielding long knives, drawing barricades on the road from the pillion of a motorcycle, damaging buses in the name of celebrating bus day, etc. And these are displayed on news channels and visual media. We are struck wondering what would happen to the future of the nation and of the students.
The presence of a weapon may goad to unexepected violence. Without a weapon making its presence, the tragic events of this novel would not have happened. The love marriage of the budding political leader of the future adds fuel to the turmoil. The angle of the inter-caste wedding is being downplayed here. Had the boy and girl waited for a time when they could stand on their own financially, the path of love would have taken a completely different route.
The unrealistic political ambitions of the student leader have misled him to a life of authoritarian thinking. One event of treachery has played havoc in their lives.
But one saving grace for them was the capability to forgive and love one another as before.
The novel begins with the student leader choosing a knife and in the end the destiny of the knife is a different one.
