Most of us, at some time in our life, get bullied. It is painful and has long-term consequences. Victims feel exploited, angry, and hurt. What about the bully? They are also people, and usually use the victim to act out their own problems of insecurity. In Mean Gene on the Scene, Gene has no idea that his bullying of Phil is so devastating and has hurt him so badly. In fact, Gene considers his act of bullying to be trivial and forgivable. So much so that he feels that Phil can become his playmate. Since some time has elapsed and they both are older, let’s put the past aside. Gene is in for a surprise and a rude awakening that bullying will not lead to friendship! Phil continues to be angry and hurt at Gene and gets his every dog has his day moment. This story will illicit an understanding of two young boys coming from different perspectives. Looking into the mind of the bully is important because remorse builds character and an awareness of human nature. It allows us to root for the child, and feel shame and disappointment in the bully himself. It also fortifies us with the notion that the bully feels pain, and perhaps with this awareness, can learn and never bully again. The feeling of freedom, revenge, and peace is clearly felt and taught to both the bully and the former victim.
