In the near future, scientists discover a flickering artificial sun headed towards Earth. Code named Deimos , this alien threat becomes the impetus for a massive outworld colonization program, the creation of an army of mechs to defend the planet, and a bioengineering initiative to adapt the human race to survive the apocalypse. All of these projects are kept secret from the civilian population, including the orphan Junior Rangers they depend upon.

Junior Rangers leave on the last colony mission before Deimos reaches Earth. When the Homestead is forced to land far from the ocean, colonists hide in kilometer-deep canyons to survive the heat. Back on the moon, Doc Blaitel realizes that humans have no chance against Deimon mechs. He takes the Junior Rangers to Bluebeard-3 to get help, finding that the bio-mech Smileys are already mobilizing for war.
