MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging and it is used to take pictures of the internal organs and soft tissues of the body without using X-rays. It uses magnets and radio waves to produce detailed pictures of the body’s soft tissues and internal organs. During the process of magnetic resonance imaging, a dye known as contrast medium is injected into the person’s blood via a vein in the forearm or hand. A type of MRI, known as magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is used to provide a detailed view of blood vessels that supply blood to the kidneys.
