Author Mazell Miley from the simplicity of a rural Kentucky childhood to an almost complexity of life in the urban areas. In whatever setting the author found herself, she always had the virtues of enterprise and self-reliance. Left with six children when her husband died suddenly, she raised them by herself. Her husband's death underscored her concern about the healthcare in this country. Miley left home during World War II. She met her husband, a member of the US Navy. They had a life of hard work, gardening, and canning the vegetables she grew, taking care of Paw Paw Trees, and freezing the fruit.

The past sixteen years have been the hardest, with Miley's son being in prison with more time to go. This led Miley to question her faith in American institutions, especially the legal system.
