I never thought I would write a book, and I would never call myself a writer. I would, however, say that I'm confident about what I think coaching should be and what a good coach is.
I also like to think that I could identify what my athletes needed from me and what my students needed from me when I was coaching and teaching full time. That's not to say I was right all the time. It's just one of the few areas where I feel confident.
Arriving at the decision to retire from high school coaching following the 2021 season was both difficult and painful. Although I believed it was time, I also knew I would be saying goodbye to a life to which I was very much attached. I had to be sure I would have a full-time job to fill the void left by coaching. The transition to working in the Learning Center with students every day made me think more about coaching than I had when I was actually coaching.
There are aspects of coaching and being a coach that I will never leave or "retire" from. What I have tried to do in writing this book is share the moments from my coaching career that made it so special for me. I wanted to share how important coaching is to me and how important I believe coaching is for everyone.
