The values in ‘Baffin the Bear’
Baffin the Bear is a story about selfish behaviour. It covers the actions of a rude young bear who won’t share and who grabs the best for himself - and his eventual comeuppance. The story can be used to highlight all similar acts displayed by children who are moving from that ‘toddler’ phase of strong ego identification to that of early social training in family and small peer groups. Baffin’s inability to share his quiet pool can be used to parallel a child’s unwillingness to share toys, games, equipment and so on.
Baffin learns that sharing means having friends to help you out of difficulty. For most children, the message is more likely that sharing creates friendships.
