Chemistry is a branch of science. Many chemists have contributed to the development of chemistry. The journey of development of science and chemistry is interesting and inspiring. Thus, to inspire young student community we thought of writing a book on history of chemical science, which includes biographies of renouned chemists.
Study of history was initiated by Carl Schorlemmer of Germany and Pierre Maurice Marie Duhem of France in 18th century. Later, some chemists have attempted to shed light on history of science in United States and Turkey. To the best of our knowledge, only few scientists have attempted to write about history of science, in particular chemistry.
Science started developing from old civilizations like Mesopotamia, Egypt, American, Indus valley and Chinese civilizations. Later, science was developed from scientists of Europe. In Europe, Germans lead scientific discoveries. People from other parts of world were trained in Germany. The pinnacle of scientific discoveries was the highest in 17 and 18th Century in Germany.
In this volume, we present biographies of chemists from old civilizations to 1865. We intent to publish biographies of chemists from 1866 to present in the next volume. We have presented biographies of 250 chemists in this volume.
Through this book, we insist Indian chemical academicians to add history of chemical science either in under graduate or postgraduate courses, which will inspire students to study chemistry.
