Cairo the Camel teaches the value of taking on responsibility. Cairo is a young camel who is impatient to prove he can work as hard as the older members of the camel train, but his body is still growing and, for the moment, he is forced to tag along with nothing to do. It takes a special event to show how the young camel can make a contribution and to earn him his place in the team.Cairo has all the energy and optimism of youth and it is his ability to run and chase, push and pull and stand guard through the night, that is finally rewarded.

Cairo the camel proves to the rest of the camel train that he is grown-up and responsible enough to carry a load just like all the adult camels.

– About the camel…

There are two main kinds of camel and children can be encouraged to look at and draw pictures identifying the main difference. The dromedary, or Arabian camel, has a single hump and the Bactrian camel has two humps.

About half of the world’s camels are found in Somalia and Ethiopia where they have been domesticated to provide milk, food and transportation. There are wild Bactrian camels in the Gobi Desert in China and Mongolia and wild dromedaries in parts of Australia.

The camel’s special physical features make it an unusual and interesting animal, and topic suggestions at the back of this book are designed to explore these.
