Do you know what makes the thunder? As a little boy plays in his room, a storm rages outside. When a loud crack of thunder sends him running to his mum in the kitchen, it begins his journey through the house to various family members for the answer to the question, What makes the thunder? See what happens when they all have their own imaginative story to tell. Karen McNaughton has been writing short stories and poems since she was a little girl. The idea for What Makes the Thunder? was born out of the two years she spent living in Vietnam, which has its share of tropical storms. During those times, she would make up fun stories to calm her children. In Queensland, Australia, where they now live, storms are of a similar nature. Her children, she says, have always been her inspiration, and it was a combination of their influence and her passion for the story that led to its creation. McNaughton is now in the process of writing a series of stories in the same genre to provide children with imaginative tales that also impart knowledge.
