Life in the time of William Shakespeare was a period of great advancement in literature but it was also a time when there was a tremendous gap in the standard of living between the rich and poor. Among the topics discussed in this social history are the harsh punishments administered to criminals, the squalid conditions of the English cities, and the educational system of England, which provided schooling to the children of aristocrats only.
