The basic premise of this book is that the organizations that will succeed are those in which there are: 1) Teams of strong, multi-discipline protagonists, with clearly defined roles, intent on creating change; 2) Teams of strong, multi-discipline protagonists, with clearly defined roles, intent on maximizing results under the existing conditions and situation; 3) Senior management that understands this necessity, provides the support and measurements both sets of protagonists require, and is then able to achieve just the right balance in their activities to obtain the best possible over all results. In order to provide an illustration of the concept in action, the reader is led through the component organizations of a typical manufacturing company. However, it is important to recognize that the concept developed is equally applicable to many other types of organizations such as governments, religious organizations, educational institutions, etc. Throughout the book, the pervasiveness of core competence as an important management tool is also emphasized. In a postscript, an analogy is drawn to the observation in Chaos Theory that the organism that survives, as the environment is modified, is one that has, contained within it, the proper balance between the chaotic state and frozen state.
