Stumbling upon the body of a woman who had served as a model for the mosaic pictured on his study wall, John, Lord Chamberlain to the Emperor Justinian, searches for answers about the identity of the enigmatic woman, a quest that takes him to the dark streets of the Copper Market region of Constantinople and finds him not only trying to identify a murderer, but also unraveling a plot against the empire itself.
