This nineteenth-century version of the Don Juan legend is the longest-running play in Spain. Zorrilla’s play owes a great deal to Tirso de Molina’s original Siglo de Oro drama, but Zorilla’s lead is a more conflicted character, appropriate to the Romantic age.
