The author was orphaned at the age of six, along with her brother and sister. They were taken to the Woodman Circle Home in Sherman, Texas, where they spent several years, before being adopted into permanent families.

The Woodman Circle Home was owned and sponsored by the Supreme Forest Woodman Circle Life Insurance Company and opened in the 1920s. The home was the first of its kind that provided a home for widows and orphaned children whose families had life insurance policies with the Woodman Circle Life Insurance Company. Orphaned children were allowed to live there until they graduated high school.
