This volume begins in 1598 with a description by Don Juan de Onate of the Acoma Indians’ first contact with Christianity in New Mexico. It ranges through the encounters between the Huron and Iroquois and French Jesuits in the 17th century and on to Lakota encounters in the 19th century. The documents range from an 1830 Patawatomi request that the Bishop of Detroit give us a Black-gown to teach us the Word of God to a 1987 formal apology on he part of Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen and nine other Christian leaders.
