Stability of Particle Motion in Storage Rings

Particle beam stability is crucial to any accelerator or collider, particularly big ones such as Brookhaven’s RHIC heavy ion collider and the larger SSC and LHC proton schemes. This text, the proceedings of an American Institute of Physics conference, considers analytical, computational and experimental methods in the following topics: short-term behaviour of particles in storage rings, typically of a thousand revolutions; long-term behaviour and the issue of diffusion and diffusion-like processes; and the most advanced methods of research proper to the investigation of motion stability in storage rings.
