The River

* US premiere in fall 2014: a Broadway production starring Hugh Jackman. Previews begin October 31, official opening November 17 at Circle in the Square Theatre.

* Had its world premiere at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 2012, starring Dominic West. Opened to rave reviews and was a sell-out hit.

* Butterworth’s previous play, Jerusalem, was a huge hit in London (Royal Court, 2009 and West End, 2010-2011), and on Broadway (2011). It was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play, and star Mark Rylance won the Tony Award for Best Actor

* Mojo, one of Butterworth’s older plays (premiered 1995) received a 2013 revival on London’s West End, starring Rupert Grint (Harry Potter), Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey) and Ben Whishaw.

* Butterworth is also a screenwriter. His most recent credits include the 2014 James Brown biopic Get On Up (starring Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer) and the 2014 action film Edge of Tomorrow (starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt).

* Previous screenwriting credits include Fair Game (2010, starring Sean Penn), The Last Legion (2007, starring Ben Kingsley and Colin Firth), Birthday Girl (2001, starring Nicole Kidman), and a 1997 screen adaptation of his play Mojo.
