Los Amigos de Becky

Ronaldo Hinojosa,Rolando Hinojosa (University of California Santa Barbara)

Los amigos de Becky is another addition to Rolando Hinojosa’s Klail City Death Trip Series of novels, which follow generations of Anglos and Mexicans in the fictional Rio Grande Valley town of Klail City, Texas. In this novel, Hinojosa focuses on a character who has previously not taken the limelight: the strong-willed, upwardly mobile Becky Escobar. He also reveals women’s culture and language through his portraits and dialog of other important women who have appeared in the series, such as Sammie Jo Perkins, Viola Barragan and others. Here, finally, sex and male/female relationships take center stage. This book deals with all the problems of an emerging Hispanic culture: the use of Spanish as opposed to English, a growing political consciousness, women’s battle for independence in a male-dominated social order, the role of the church, and the relationship of the Hispanic community to the larger world.
