This book chronicles the career of Bernard Maybeck (1862-1957), one of the most innovative and influential architects in the Arts and Crafts movement. Raised in Greenwich Village and trained in Paris, Maybeck spent most of his long career in northern California. An irrespressible bohemian with no desire to run a large office, he designed mainly houses, with two notable exceptions: the brilliant Church of Christ, Scientist, and the gloriously romantic Palace of Fine Arts. This book features in full colour Maybeck’s exquisite interiors and exteriors and analyzes every aspect of his work. Presenting not only his architecture but also his furniture, his lighting designs, and his innovations in fire-resistant construction, it includes documentary photographs. This aims to be a major study of an internationally significant architect whose environmentally responsive work has much to offer to today’s designers. Also included is an illustrated catalogue of buildings by Maybeck.
