Teddy plans to sneak out of his school’s attendance at a Remembrance Day ceremony so he can compete in a War Games tournament. The day before the event, he meets an old veteran who gives him a special poppy. That night, Teddy is transported to three wartime situations. He finds himself in the trenches of the First World War, aboard a WWII naval vessel and in a WWII air force bomber. Teddy is never certain if he is dreaming or if he has actually traveled to other times and places. Some of the people he meets are his own family forebears. He makes friends, but also encounters people who aren’t friendly. In each situation, Teddy experiences life in a war zone. He is involved in battles and witnesses death. His key to escaping danger lies in knowing the poem, In Flanders Fields. Each strange adventure teaches Teddy something about the wars and the people who fought them, and about himself. When he finally returns to his own world, his feeling about Remembrance Day has changed. He remains uncertain about whether he was dreaming or something weird actually happened to him, until he makes a small but startling discovery in his own room.
