Holland

Nestled between the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, the town that would become Holland was founded by Arthur Humphrey, Abner Currier, and Jared Scott, who traveled from Vermont by oxen in 1807 and settled in a beautiful valley that was once an Indian trail. In 1818, the town of Willink was divided into three towns: Holland, Aurora, and Wales; Holland became a township in April 1818. The town flourished and soon contained general stores, hotels, schools, and churches. Holland was a mostly agricultural community, but locals could also find work in the local mills, tannery, and spring works company. The start of the 20th century brought tragedy as the town suffered severe losses to its business district in the great fire of 1910. The following year, businesses rebuilt. This book–a celebration of Holland’s history and its people–has been created to coincide with the town’s bicentennial in 2018.
