Joie Carrero, was one of Pan American Airways first five stewards and served as a steward for eleven years. However, he worked for Pan Am for a total of fifty years. Before he passed away in 1987, he recorded his stories on tape, these were transcribed into text by his grandson, Kenneth Slagle. These first hand stories are paired with incredibly rare and historical photos that were passed down in the family. Some of these photos have never been seen before, making this book a valuable piece of aviation history! Joe Carrero was a steward that participated in many historical events. Some of which, were the Inaugural Flight of the American Clipper S-40 in 1931, this was accompanied by Charles Lindbergh, who was a famous American aviator. This flight also included copilot Captain Basil Rowe. This was the first four engine flight ever in Pan American history traveling from Miami, Florida to Cristobal, Panama. This was also the first flight including passengers on the Sikorsky S-40.In addition, Joie was the first steward to cross the Million Mile Club mark, there after five other stewards reached this club status as well. In time, Joie also reached the Two Million Mile Club member achievement, along with Nilo Borges. Steward Joie and first Pan Am mechanic Steve Whalton were present at the dedication of the Historical Marker placing in Key West, Florida in 1977. This was for Pan Americans 50th year Anniversary of U.S. International Air Service.Within this book, Joie details these events and his experiences on flights all over the West Indies and South America. These were flown in many plane models, some of which were the Sikorsky S-40, 41, 42, the Fokker F-7, F-10 and the Commodore Seaplane. Joie hoped one day these stories could be shared with those interested in the beginning of American Aviation.
