Excerpt from Hippolytus and Callistus: Or the Church of Rome in the First Half of the Third Century; With Reference to the Writings of Bunsen, Wordsworth, Baur, and Gieseler On this innocent passage the Review comments in these words: Who would not suppose from this passage that Dr. Dollinger answered ‘the Catholics who sought to weaken the testimony of the author, ’ by showing that his testimony was worthy of credit? [why so? Any more than that he answered the Pro testants ‘who endeavoured to use his authority for the purpose of throwing discredit on the Church of Rome?’ It is said that’ he answered both parties, and of the names given the majority are those of anti Romanists Who could for a moment guess that Dr. Dollinger himself not only weakens, but annihilates the witness of Hippolytus; and that his only difference from Le Normant is, that that writer declares for Origen, while he himself considers Hippolytus to be the author? But perhaps Mr. Plummer, though suppressing the truth about the Munich divine, is himself worthy of being considered an independent authority. We hardly think so, etc. Etc.
