It is an odd fact that Yarmouth grew richer as it grew smaller. By 1849, parts of six towns had been formed from the original settlement and yet Yarmouth still prospered due to the many mills and shipyards clustered around its sheltered harbor. The mansions of sea captains and merchants arose along its elm-shaded streets.
