Gorgeous 42nd Anniversary gift edition of Douglas Adams’s pop-culture classic, _The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galax_y, stunningly illustrated throughout by Costa Award-winner Chris Riddell.
It’s an ordinary Thursday lunchtime for Arthur Dent until his house gets demolished. The Earth follows shortly afterwards to make way for a new hyperspace express route, and Arthur’s best friend has just announced that he’s an alien. At this moment, they’re hurtling through space with nothing but their towels and a book inscribed in large, friendly letters: DON’T PANIC.
The book is The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and the weekend has only just begun …
Douglas Adams’s mega-selling pop-culture classic sends logic into orbit, plays havoc with physics and twists time, but most importantly it’s very, very funny.

A radio play, a trilogy of five (or six, depending on whether you count Eoin Colfer’s 2009 contribution to the series), a TV series, multiple comic books and stage shows, a video game, a film, and now a new illustrated edition by the legendary Chris Riddell. There seems to be an insatiable hunger for the adventures of Arthur, Ford, Zaphod, Trillian and Marvin.
Having read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy countless times, I was sceptical I could be captivated all over again. Luckily, Riddell’s charming illustrations manage to add a whole new dimension to Adams’ work. Done in Riddell’s signature style, the illustrations capture the humour and whimsy of the classic sci-fi caper, while providing a new perspective on Adams’ universe. The pairing of author and illustrator makes this anniversary edition an amazing introduction for a new generation of fans, old and young alike.
My only complaint? I want more illustrations. Chris, could you please draw something for every page? Highly recommended for ages 12+.
