Within the study of Endocrinology, particularly the thyroid gland, there are wide ranging subjects. In this volume John Lazarus has illustrated this by referring to his introduction to clinical aspects of thyroid disease while at medical school. He continued this interest as a postgraduate and developed research interests in clinical thyroid disease as well as laboratory studies. In addition to hospital practice he found time to further his research at Columbia University, New York. Thyroidology is not only a study of thyroid disease in the clinical setting but it is seen in different forms in developing countries and John took advantage of this by leading epidemiological studies in Senegal and Sri Lanka. Retirement opened new vistas on the charity front in Cardiff as well as world wide involvement in iodine nutrition. At home he relates how he became involved in medical education in Glasgow and in Cardiff as well as being involved in administration of the National Health Service. This book is full of varied experiences and is well worth a read.
