The book is for English-speaking and French-speaking learners to learn first 4 level Chinese vocabularies in use. It is also for Chinese-speaking learners of to learn English and French vocabularies in use of the first 4 levels.

I. The book is for English-speaking and French-speaking learners of all ages to gradually learn first 4 level Chinese vocabularies in use, levels fixed by the Council of Europe. He or she can work gradually since each word entry has clearly marked level signs:

Level 1--A1

Level 2--A2

Level 3--B1

Level 4--B2-S1

II. For Chinese-speaking learners of all ages to learn (1) English and French vocabularies in use of the first 4 levels gradually, and (2) Chinese ideograms of classical writing (given in my book at the same time with the simplified writing).

III. The book is designed for self-study. Each entry (of 540 words--level 2/A2 and 2400 words--level 4/B2) has two or three examples, sometimes up to six or seven, and each example has Chinese, English, and French equivalent sentences, which learners can work themselves. However, a teacher can test to see if the students have well mastered the words he had asked to work.

Hua Zhang received his foreign language degree at Beijing Foreign Languages Studies University in China, and he continued his studies in France in 1984. After earning his doctorate at EHESS (Paris) in 1991, he taught Chinese and English (cross culture) at the University of Lille, Berlitz School (Villeneuve d'Ascq), and the Centre de Pratique de Langues Etrangeres, Lille.
