The sun shone brightly on a little town in New England where nine-year-old Sarah lived with her brother, James, and their mother, Teresa. Just two weeks prior, there had been great joy in their little town. It was May 1945, and the end of World War II was being celebrated.

When Sarah awoke that morning, she found that there was no food in the house. Her mother had lost her job to the soldiers coming home from the war. It was thought better to hire the men back as most of the women did not need the jobs to support them.
