…About halfway back, I looked around. The sky was slowly lighting on fire, the ocean a dim copy. The waves were thrashing and colliding harshly against the jetty. High tide had been reached, and the water swelled onto shore. I looked towards the harbor, where the water was calm and quiet. A seal bobbed its head by the rocks below. It looked strange, but I couldn’t figure out why. The dim light made it difficult to see any details. I scrambled down the rocks as quickly as I could to get a better look. I stood on a rock submerged in water reaching up to my knees. I could tell it wasn’t a seal, but it wasn’t a dolphin or a sea lion either. It was dark and light at the same time, sprawled out in the water. The current was pushing it towards me, and I nearly jumped out of my skin when I realized it was a person… When the safety of humans and merpeople are threatened, both must strive to protect their people from the dangers of the deep and the people who would expose the ocean’s secrets.
