In the 1880s Emma Clarke came west from Ohio to Kansas in a covered wagon built by her father. They continued from Kansas to California by train. Emma’s mother died after they reached San Francisco leaving Emma and her father Thomas to raise toddler Dillyshane and baby Myra. Along with the help of a Chinese houseboy, nine-year-old Emma took charge.
