Max and Memie are the principle characters in this satirical story. Max grows up in desperately poor circumstances with his Irish father Harry (Dingle) Bellman and Latin American mother Izza. His is a very bright level headed young man with natural social skills.

Memie comes from a suffocatingly wealthy background but is orphaned aged twelve. Sent off to the Defrugal Graduation School for the Super Rich she hates it and rebels against all and everything. She is by nature neurotic, difficult, but fearless in the face of danger. As a young woman and sometimes accompanied by her pet pig Comrade Potty, she seeks out revolutions of one sort or another. However not only is she looking for trouble but by virtue of her great wealth, trouble is also looking for her.

Max thinks Memie politically naive but as friend and bodyguard is forever pulling her back from the brink. Throughout there is an underlying sexual tension, but in the end Max’s efforts at keeping Memie safe comes to nothing.
