Twelve-year-old Mary Elizabeth has lived in New York City all her life. After her mother dies, she is living on the streets alone. Too many orphans filled these streets and they were sent West on steam engine trains. Mary Elizabeth, against her will, goes West on one of these orphan trains. Miserable, she becomes her own worst enemy. She pulls her old cap over her eyes, refusing to smile, even though she is told she will never find her forever home that way. Join Mary Elizabeth in her journey to find where she truly belongs. Good people will help you in your life, but you have to help yourself also.
