When it was built in 1933 from sixty-five tons of coal mined from the Winifrede seam in Mingo County, West Virginia, the Coal House was the only building made of coal. Located on Second Avenue in Williamson, West Virginia, its purpose was to be a monument to the coal industry to show its importance in the Tug Valley Area.
A picture book for children by author Leigh Ann Ray, I Am Made of Coal!, shares the story of how this special and historic building came to be. Through words and pictures, it also tells how the structure was damaged by fire and was restored inside and out.
I Am Made of Coal! narrates the important role the Coal House plays and how it proudly proclaims the special history of the area.
