On the night Jesus was born, a tired family rested with their new baby in a cold stable. Exhausted and in need of sleep, no one stayed awake to tend the fire to keep the baby Jesus warm–no one but the robin, hovering in the rafters of the stable.
The little robin used her own nest to stoke the flames that kept the family warm through the night until the shepherds arrived. Because of her sacrifice, the robin was given a gift from God. Ever since that night, the robin’s breast has been a beautiful red orange, like a warm fire. It is a symbol of honor, a remembrance of a very magical night in Bethlehem.
Join in the retelling of this Irish/Welsh legend with Mim and her granddaughter as they share the tale of a plain little bird that saved the child who would save us all.
