You cannot imagine how strenuous the life of a private detective is until you have been on a case with Johnny Liddell. In Poisons Unknown, Liddell is offered a fat fee by a New York gangster to locate one Brother Alfred, proprietor of a cult (complete with temple and orgies) outside New Orleans, who has inconveniently disappeared. Before he’s through, Johnny has been from one end of Royal Street to the other and knows all about the vice in the Eye Almighty Tabernacle – and in the low down slums!
