Lelah was born in Kansas, daughter of a Methodist minister, grew up in Southern Iowa, lived on an Iowa farm, and was the mother of five children. She wrote poetry, played the piano, painted in oils and created pottery, all self taught. She taught herself to read French and studied astronomy. Her grandchildren loved her poems.
