In the final days of the War Between the States, Union scout Roy Smith witnesses a secret meeting between a Confederate officer and Union general. But Smith can’t quite hear what is said, and the incident becomes only a vague notation in the company record book. Even Smith barely remembers what happened after he musters out and heads west to become a rancher…until a man named John Nichols arrives at the L-Bar-7 asking about the officers involved. When Nichols goes missing days later, Smith knows he can no longer afford to forget about what he saw-his very life depends on untangling a plot filled with deceit, dishonor and greed.
