They were a strange trio-the lieutenant, the scout and the red-haired woman. Part of a peace-making U.S. Army expedition, they fought their way west, battling the fury of a savage Indian mad-man-then they had to survive their trek back through even greater dangers.

Their harrowing journey was part of the legendary first assignment of the 1st Regiment of United States Dragoons, the horse soldiers whose origins marked the birth of the most famous mounted fighting force in history-the U.S. Cavalry.
