Long hours of back-breaking labor were nothing new to Hungarian immigrant Lazlo Kusik. He was willing to do whatever it took to find his fortune in the gold-rich hills of the Sierra Nevada. But after a sweltering summer and bitter fall of shoveling sand through his sluice in the rushing waters of Lost Creek, all he had to show for it was a few traces of the elusive metal.

Then Lazlo’s luck finally found him when he stumbled upon a brush-covered crevice that hid a thick vein of quartz webbed with strands of gleaming gold. But what seemed at first to be the find of a lifetime may end up killing Lazlo. For he still had to bring his treasure back to civilization, through unforgiving territory filled with gold-hungry hardcases.
