Lost, broken, divided, and alone, Catherine Carey must leave her home in Charleston, South Carolina, after a terrible fire destroys everything she knows. She ventures to Saint Louis, where she must live with godparents she does not know and begin a new life. After stumbling upon a startling surprise in the home of her godparents, she is forced to contemplate her values and sacrifice her beliefs.
