Wick has always lived in the dark and dreadful Harklights Match Factory and Orphanage, working tirelessly for greedy Old Ma Bogey. He only dreams of escaping, until one day a bird drops something impossible and magical at his feet - a tiny baby in an acorn cradle…
As midnight chimes, Wick is visited by the Hobs, miniature protectors of the forest. Grateful for the kindness shown to their stolen child, they offer Wick the chance of a lifetime - escape from Harklights and begin a new life with them in the wild…
Winner of the Joan Aiken Future Classics Prize, Harklights is a magical story celebrating family, friendship and the natural world, filled with a message of hope for our times

Harklights is a terrible, Dickensian prison of acute privation and suffering; an orphanage and match factory run by the cruel and despicable Ma Bogey. But despite the relentless dehumanising work, our hero Wick dreams of liberty, so when opportunity arises, he escapes to the surrounding forest where he’s adopted by tiny forest folk, the keepers of wild magic and protectors of the woodland and its inhabitants. It is in this astonishing environment that Wick finds his greater purpose, never forgetting the friends he left behind.
This remarkable debut adventure is an atmospheric creation of beautifully imagined scenes and unforgettable characters: lovable heroes, contemptible villains, determined children and forest folk striving against the odds, culminating in a thoroughly surprising and satisfying ending. It explores themes of friendship, family and courage, good versus evil, the power of love, and determination to overcome even the greatest adversity. The writing is beautiful, and the superbly moody illustrations capture the essence of an adventure steeped in mystery and foreboding.
Harklights is a wonderful read-aloud story – ideal for families and the classroom, and highly recommended for confident readers ages 8 and up. Lovers of stories by Matilda Woods are in for a treat!
