Camille was interested in peasants who were going about their own business. When you look at Pissarro's works, you may recognise particular figures and gestures but realise they are in a different setting. You may feel like you have been fooled by your memory. For instance, a peasant washing her feet in a stream and another peasant wearing one sock. Later, I began to enjoy this game (or challenge!) of identifying these recurring motifs and I collected those similar paintings in this one book. I hope you will also find it interesting. You may also identify figures that I have missed - let's share our new findings! But most of all, let us appreciate Pissarro for embedding this game in his works with his relentless hard work, aiming to find the perfect pose in the perfect background.
